Processors with more than 10 cores were present only in the Intel Xeon series or in high performance working stations. It seems that this will change. As a result processors with more than 10 cores will be launched from this summer on the market for desktop PC. The most powerful of them is the Intel Core i9-7980XE with a staggering 18 physical cores on a single silicon chip. Ceratinly Intel takes the battle a serious one with his main competitor AMD. Furthermore they have announced the family of Threadripper processors – a range of 10,12, 14 and 16-core desktop processors.

Intel reveals its first 18 Cores processor for desktops

As part of the Skylake-X family and created fo the X299 platform (socket LGA-2066), Intel Core i9-7980XE will bulldoze its competition represented by AMD Threadripper platform. This would offer “only” 16 processor cores with the Ryzen 9 1998X.

The full name of this new processor family is the Intel Core i9-7900X X-series processor. This first version will be made available with 10 cores and 20 threads, with 18, 16, 14 and 12 core variants coming soon.

Equipped with an impressive number of 18 physical cores and HyperThreading technology, the Intel Core i9-7980XE will be able to process up to 36 threads having an impressive 24.75 Mb of L3 cache memory and quad-channel DDR4-2666 memory.

This means that Intel is almost doubling its core numbers. AMD who is planning to go all-out with Ryzen and Threadripper will have a tough competition to face. But one important information is missing. Unfortunately the price for the new Intel processors are not available yet, therefor it will be an important decision factor. But still, AMD is planing to offer compelling performance for the price.
